Graduate Training Programs

Training in Psychology

Horizon Services Incorporated offers masters level internships and doctoral level practicum in clinical psychology. The training program is nine-months, beginning the second week in September and ending the last week of June. The program is committed to providing the intern with the opportunity to develop increasing autonomy and clinical responsibility commensurate with the intern’s education training and professional competence. The staff at Horizon Services Inc. is characterized by a range of theoretical and therapeutic orientations including psychodynamic, control mastery, family systems, 12-step recovery and relapse prevention, motivational interviewing, and cognitive-behavioral approaches.

The program is dedicated to providing interns with the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field of substance abuse and dual diagnosis treatment. The intern has the opportunity for exposure to a wide range of diagnostic categories and substance use disorders in working with individuals and groups at one of five programs. Diversified experiences include training in alcohol and drug assessment, family and couple therapy, and providing client education. Training in understanding cultural and individual differences is an integral part of the internship program. The legal and ethical, social and political issues in the practice of psychology and marriage and family therapy are considered vital to the training of professionals in psychology.

The mission of the Graduate Training Program (GTP) at Horizon Services Inc. is to provide a high quality, consistent, structured education and training experience that will enable future psychologists and marriage and family therapists to understand the complex, multifaceted nature of addiction problems and to experience and promote the remarkable transformation of the recovery process.

The mission of the GTP is consistent with the mission of Horizon Services Inc. which is “committed to reducing alcohol and drug related problems within the community.”

Values

  • The GTP values training interns to become practitioners able to utilize multiple treatment approaches and modalities in order to best serve the needs of clients with complex psychological problems. This is accomplished through didactic training, clinical supervision and a variety of clinical experiences.
  • The training emphasizes the need to address each individual client as unique with special attention to individual and cultural differences, and respects the ethics and laws as pertaining to the practice of psychology.
  • Interns are taught critical thinking methods to assess clinical situations and to apply appropriate and contemporary assessment and treatment methods in the science of psychology.
  • The program values a learning environment, which means that it promotes the creativity and/or implementation of new thoughts and behaviors by those involved.
  • The program values professional collegiality and respect among staff and interns. The primary role of the intern is that of trainee rather than service provider, although a key aspect of the training is providing direct service.

Goals

  • To provide opportunities for interns to work with clients who have any one or more of a variety of substance use disorders and other mental health diagnoses.
  • To provide clinical training in assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
  • To provide interns with opportunities that foster professionalism, collegiality and mutual respect with interns from other schools and staff.
  • To promote cultural and individual diversity in the selection and training of interns.

To provide competent, experienced and trained clinical supervisors to support student learning and maintain excellent services.
