Clinical Services & Internships
Horizon Services, Inc. (HSI) strives to provide counseling services that are culturally
appropriate and of continually improving quality. In support of this goal, Clinical
Services provides clinical supervision, program development, program director
support, staff training, and oversees the Graduate Training Program (GTP).
Monthly counselor trainings increase the skills of
HSI staff serving those with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health problems.
Counselor trainings (and full day all-staff trainings held three times a year)
are eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for Certified Substance
Abuse Counselors, helping staff meet yearly CEU requirements.
Graduate Training Program (GTP)
Consistent with the mission of Horizon Services Inc.,
the Graduate Training Program (GTP) is “committed to reducing alcohol and
drug related problems within the community.” The GTP provides high quality,
consistent, structured education and training experiences to enable future psychologists,
marriage and family therapists, and social workers to understand the complex,
multifaceted nature of addiction and co-occurring problems, and to facilitate
the transformation of recovery.
Masters and doctoral level training begins the second
week in September and ends in June. Trainees are provided with the opportunity
to develop increasing autonomy and responsibility commensurate with their education,
training, and clinical competence.
The multidisciplinary teams at Horizon Services Inc. use
a range of theoretical and therapeutic orientations including cognitive-behavioral,
12-step recovery and relapse prevention, psychodynamic, family systems, motivational
interviewing, and others. Treatment approaches are welcoming, client-centered,
gender and culture responsive, and trauma informed. The legal, ethical, social,
and political issues in clinical practice are also addressed as essential to the
training of mental health and substance abuse treatment professionals.
HSI is dedicated to providing trainees with the opportunity
to gain substantial knowledge and experience in the field of substance abuse and
co-occurring disorders treatment. The trainee is exposed to a wide range of diagnostic
categories and substance use disorders while working with individuals and groups.
Diversified experiences include training in alcohol and drug assessment, individual
counseling and psychotherapy, group facilitation, psychoeducation, and family
therapy/education. Training in understanding cultural and individual differences
is an integral part of the program.
GTP Values
* The GTP values helping trainees become practitioners
able to utilize multiple treatment approaches and modalities in order to best
serve the needs of clients with complex problems. This is accomplished through
didactic training, clinical supervision, and a variety of clinical experiences.
* Training emphasizes the need to address each individual
client as unique with special attention to individual and cultural differences,
and respecting the ethics and laws pertaining to professional practice.
* Training values and teaches critical thinking methods
in clinical situations and applying appropriate and contemporary assessment and
treatment methods.
* The program values a supportive learning environment,
professional collegiality and respect among staff and interns.
* While the primary role of the student is that of trainee
rather than service provider, the GTP values learning by doing and a key aspect
of training is through providing direct services.
GTP Goals
* To provide competent, experienced clinical supervision
to support learning and maintain excellent services.
* To provide clinical training in assessment, diagnosis,
treatment, and cultural competency.
* To promote cultural diversity in the selection and training
of interns.
* To foster professionalism, collegiality, multidisciplinary
teamwork, and mutual respect with students from other schools and with staff.
* To provide opportunities for interns and trainees to
work with diverse clients who have one or more substance use disorders plus a
wide variety of other diagnoses and challenges.
