Missing Opportunities in Screening and Treating Alcohol Disorder

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) remains a critical public health challenge, yet significant gaps persist in screening, advising, and treating individuals who meet the criteria for AUD. A recent analysis of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data from 2015 to 2019 highlights these disparities and reinforces Horizon Treatment Services’ commitment to bridging these gaps.

Elisio Becerra, CFO

Key Findings:

  • Only 52.9% of individuals meeting AUD criteria were screened by a healthcare provider in the past year.
  • 21.6% received advice to reduce alcohol use, while 17.7% were informed about problematic use.
  • Just 7.6% were offered treatment options.

Disparities in care were evident among women, racial and ethnic minorities, and those with lower socioeconomic status. Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic individuals, along with those experiencing lower income or poor health, were less likely to receive screening or treatment advice. Co-occurring substance use further influenced screening rates, with individuals misusing prescription pain relievers being more likely to receive attention than those using stimulants or sedatives.
