I had an incredible internship at Horizon Treatment Services, where I experienced learning opportunities that exceeded my expectations. The staff, especially my field instructor, Itzia Cruz, were highly knowledgeable about working with the co-occurring population. They were respectful, supportive, and always willing to help. I felt trusted as a team member, and my contributions were valued.

As someone with no prior experience in a residential setting with clients who have co-occurring disorders, I was initially nervous. However, the weekly one-on-one supervision with my field instructor, Itzia Cruz, and the daily hands-on support from the staff greatly helped me develop my skills for this setting and population while making me feel safe.

Horizon was an excellent environment for me to develop and refine my skills in mezzo practice, such as group facilitation, and in micro practice, including one-on-one work with clients and counselors. I also learned how to develop group curricula, write case notes, and apply evidence-based practices like motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy, all while adhering to best and ethical practices.

Being a social work intern at Cherry Hill Detox is a profoundly humbling and transformative experience. It involves more than just providing support; it's about walking alongside individuals during some of their darkest moments. Each day, I witness a mix of struggle and strength—small victories that highlight the incredible power of the human spirit. There are challenging days, but there are also moments of connection that make a significant impact. During these encounters, I realize my role is to help, listen, offer understanding, and provide hope. The recovery journey is rarely a straight path, but simply being there for someone, even in a small way, can serve as the spark that helps them move forward. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of such a welcoming team. From day one, I have been met with support, kindness, and a sense of belonging, making my transition much easier. I also want to express my appreciation for the clinical supervisors whose guidance has been invaluable. Their clear direction and expertise have helped me grow professionally and inspired confidence in my work. I am genuinely thankful for the opportunity to learn from such knowledgeable leaders and to work alongside such a dedicated team.

As a social work intern from San Jose State University, I had no idea what field I could enter, fortunately, I was able to find placement at Chrysalis, Horizon services. With the opportunity of getting to know 15 clients, I can learn how to work with different group dynamics. Furthermore, with the support of therapists, counselors, and my field supervisor I am able to comfortably explore what kind of therapeutic skill I would like to utilize, such motivational interviewing, CBT, and DBT. Working in an environment that provides high-risk care allowed me to grow not just as a social worker but as a person. With the diverse population, Chrysalis has taught me how to communicate with different people, which would continue to help me in the future.
