In the face of life’s greatest challenges, what is the single most important quality that keeps us moving forward? It isn’t strength, though that helps. It isn’t resources, though they are crucial. It is, fundamentally, hope.

Without hope for tomorrow, there is little purpose in today. Hope is the internal anchor that sustains us when the waters are rough, allowing us not just to endure, but to seek opportunities for growth and healing in our lives.

For nearly five decades, Horizon Services has been inspiring hope and healing. Our mission is to cultivate or restore a sense of hope, self-awareness, and community to people impacted by substance use and mental health challenges by providing effective trauma-informed prevention, treatment, and recovery services.

Giving Tuesday is a global moment of generosity, calling on the world to help sustain important work across all communities.

Horizon Services is asking for something different: stories of your personal hope.

We aren’t launching a traditional fundraising drive. Instead, we’re celebrating the belief that fuels our work every day—the quiet, powerful conviction that things can and will get better. We believe that hope doesn’t have to wait for an annual Tuesday, and it needn’t be saved for December 2. Hope is a currency we need to survive – to thrive. For many people, we first experienced hope in our youth – whether it was abundant or lacking, someone – something inevitably buoyed our sinking spirit, and we’ll never forget them. This is why Horizon invests in our youth through the in-school prevention services, a youth advisory board, and a safe place for LGBTQIA+ and their allies to gather and participate in sober, community building activities. Our Lambda drop-in center serves an important population. We know these youth are at a significantly higher risk of alcohol and other drug use, depression, anxiety, and suicide. In pressing times, like being in the throes of addiction and mental health challenges, we may rely on friends, family, and community to provide enough hope to sustain us.

At Horizon Services, people usually come to us when they have tried everything they could think of and finally ask for the help and support we offer. We take the responsibility seriously, and we’ve witnessed miracles of recovery! We’ve seen parents heal; families have been restored. All this results from the courageous surrendering of our clients to the challenging journey of treatment. They make a commitment to recovery and doing hard things.

Horizon has been providing hope and healing since 1976 – and while hope doesn’t pay the bills, or keep our doors open, we know that it can save lives. People often don’t know how strong they are – addiction and mental health challenges are huge barriers to success for some, but no one must do it alone.

This Giving Tuesday, we want to spotlight the origin of the strength that fuels recovery: the simple, profound hope we gain from others. Let’s turn December 2nd into a monumental day of collective encouragement.

We want to hear your stories of hope from your youth or your community.

    • What gave you hope as a kid?
    • Who inspired hope in your life when you were young?
    • What does hope look like in your community today?
