Who Inpatient Alcohol Detox Is For

Residential detox may be a good fit if you:

  • Want to stop drinking and need a safe, supervised place to do it
  • Have tried to quit on your own and couldn't
  • Don't have a safe or sober place to go through withdrawal at home
  • Have been told by a provider to complete detox before treatment
  • Have co-occurring mental health needs (both programs welcome you)

Palm Avenue serves adults of all genders, including trans and non-binary people.

When you may need hospital care first

Alcohol withdrawal can become a medical emergency. Horizon's detox programs are residential, not hospitals. At Palm Avenue, people withdrawing from alcohol need medical clearance from an emergency department before admission.

Go to an emergency room or call 911 if you have a seizure, confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, or very severe shaking or vomiting.

What should I bring to detox?

Share every medication you take during your screening call, and bring your Medi-Cal card if you have one. Staff will confirm what else to bring and the program rules before you arrive.

Can I get medication for alcohol use disorder during or after detox?

Ask during screening. At Palm Avenue, withdrawal medication can be prescribed when medically necessary, and staff can talk with you about options for ongoing care after detox.

What happens after detox?

Before you leave, your team reviews your needs and goals and refers you to the right level of treatment, such as residential care at Cronin House, outpatient treatment, or another program closer to home.
